Psychotherapy at our Borders centre

We are pleased to offer psychotherapy at First Psychology Centre, Borders.

What is it?

Psychotherapy is a process in which a psychotherapist (often termed ‘therapist’) or psychologist works with a client on long-standing difficulties or patterns of behaviour that are causing distress. The aim of psychotherapy is to help change things by both understanding how these difficulties have arisen, and then by developing strategies to do things differently in the future. Psychotherapy often takes a longer time than counselling because the problems it focuses on are more longstanding.

How does it work?

Like counselling, psychotherapy is a ‘talking therapy’ in which a client and psychotherapist, therapist or psychologist explore ongoing issues in detail, looking at difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviour, and over time work on making changes to these.

How long will it take?

Psychotherapy can often take longer than counselling and it is not uncommon to be seeing a psychotherapist or psychologist offering psychotherapy on a regular basis for a year or more. Many clients enjoy the regularity and consistency of the support such a deep approach offers. Longstanding difficulties are not easily solved and having an ongoing, regular meeting with a psychotherapist or psychologist makes it possible to do things at a pace that suits.

What types of problems can psychotherapy help with?

People often engage in psychotherapy following some sessions of counselling (many counsellors also offer psychotherapy so one often flows naturally into the other), after deciding that the problems they are grappling with have been around for a long time and need to be addressed properly. Often clients undertake psychotherapy for difficult ‘patterns of behaviour’ such as avoiding intimacy, difficulty coping with particular feelings, chronic feelings of things not being ‘right’, difficulties coming to term with loss, etc.

Finding the right psychotherapist

As with any talking therapy, any client wishing to start psychotherapy needs to find a psychotherapist, therapist or psychologist with whom they feel comfortable and able to ‘open up’, over time.
