She has particular experience working with people with anxiety disorders, depression and trauma and a special interest in working with people who have experienced trauma and complex trauma.
Catriona's way of workingCatriona is an empathic counsellor / therapist who works in a collaborative way with each client to help them achieve their goals and to feel better. Catriona uses cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) treatment plans as a basis for her therapy work, which provide a structure to sessions. She combines this approach with other therapeutic skills, such as person-centred listening skills and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy where she feels they may be helpful for an individual. As a trained artist, Catriona sometimes also uses expressive art therapy in conjunction with CBT.
Catriona's background and trainingCatriona has worked in a number of roles in a range of settings with the aim of supporting mental wellbeing. These include as a volunteer therapist working with a variety of clients and issues; working in a hospital setting delivering art workshops to enable people to express their emotions and feelings in a non-verbal way; and facilitating art based projects in the field of mental health. In addition, Catriona directed a short film about mental health and young people which was shown in a number of secondary schools in the central belt as well as in Edinburgh and Heriot Watt Universities.
Catriona has a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Group Work, a Certificate in Counselling from Edinburgh College and a Certificate in Art Therapy from Queen Margaret University. Catriona also has an MFA in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and a BA degree in Drawing and Paining from Edinburgh College of Art.
Catriona is a full member of the BABCP (British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapy).
