Dr Lesley Walker
Works as Senior Counselling Psychologist at First Psychology Centre, Borders.
She works with a wide range of issues including: anxiety; depression; marital/relationship difficulties; stress; psychological issues caused by physical health problems, (e.g. stroke, COPD, chronic pain); sexual problems, phobias; obsessive-compulsive issues (OCD); personality issues; eating disorders; low self-esteem; psychosis; abuse; and many more issues.
Lesley specialises in working with individuals suffering from psychological trauma, including childhood sexual abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She is particularly experienced in working with veterans and serving personnel from the armed forces and those working in the emergency services (e.g. fire, ambulance and police) who are exposed to distressing and traumatic events as part of their job. Lesley also has specific experience working with brain injuries and the resulting psychological distress for both the individual and their family members following the injury. Additionally, Lesley has extensive experience of working with dementia and with counselling of patients and families following the diagnosis.

Lesley's way of working
Lesley combines a number of evidence-based therapeutic approaches in her work including: cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), psychodynamic therapy, family therapy, transactional analysis, compassion focused therapy, play therapy, and psychoeducation. She provides a thorough psychological assessment and will tailor the therapy experience for each individual, couple or family, depending on their needs and preferences. She provides short-term and longer-term therapy as required.
Lesley has a warm and compassionate approach to working with people who are experiencing distress. She works in a flexible, non-judgemental and person-centred way and aims to provide a safe and caring environment in which clients can feel respected and able to explore their difficulties fully.
Lesley's background and experience
Lesley has worked in tthe field of mental health for over 10 years and has extensive experience working in the NHS, private sector and voluntary sector. She has worked with adults from 16 to 95 years old, children and adolescents.
Lesley has a doctorate in Counselling Psychology (from Teeside University); an MSc in Clinical Health Psychology (University of Stirling); and an MSc in Psychology (University of Northumbria). In addition, she has undertaken training in EMDR (levels 1-3), clinical supervision, psychological trauma in older adults, and many other areas.
Lesley is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and she is a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
