International students and mental health

Students face a number of challenges leaving home to attend a university or college, particularly with regards to making new friends and learning to be more independent. These challenges can result in feelings of stress, depression, anxiety, and loneliness. International students, in particular, may find the transitions they face to be particularly challenging.

Common reasons for mental health issues in international students

  • Less access to friends and family who often provide valuable support.
  • Needing to get to grips with living in a different culture with different values.
  • It can be a struggle to express yourself socially in a different language, which can leave difficulties making friends.
  • There can be immense pressure from family and concerns about money too.
  • Students may not be familiar with how to seek help and may worry that they wont be able to express their feelings fully in another language.

Support for international students

You can usually get free or low cost wellbeing support from your university or college and it is well worth finding out about what is available to you. This may be enough to feel better.

However, if you would like to refer yourself to someone who is independent of your educational institution, we can help.
